IHME Days 2010

The IHME Days, a public contemporary art event organized by Pro Arte Foundation Finland, are held for the second time between March 26-28, 2010 at the Old Student House (Mannerheimintie 3) in Helsinki, Finland.

This year´s themes, in the spirit of the IHME Project commissioned from Susan Philipsz, are sound as art work and art in public space. The program begins on Friday with an afternoon-evening event where experts from Finland and abroad reflect aloud on the essence of sound and the many ways in which sound can be an art work. Besides contemporary art, sound is also explored in the contexts of radio and film. Participants in the discussion include producer of YLE Radio Atelier Harri Huhtamäki (Finland) , artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff (Stockholm) and sound designer Jim McKee (San Fransisco).

Saturday´s presentations offer perspectives to Susan Philipsz´ art and her IHME Project realized at the Central Railway Station in Helsinki. Lynne Cooke, formerly curator of Dia Art Foundation and currently chief curator at Centro Reina Sofia, Madrid, will give a background presentation on Philipsz´ art. The series of IHME workshops begins on Friday with Radio Atelier´s Sound Workshop, followed by Sari Kaasinen´s Lullaby Workshop and Mieskuoro Huutajat´s Shouting Workshop on Saturday. On Sunday the workshop produced by Pixelache offers children the opportunity to build electronic instruments and compile the produced sounds into sound pieces.

The theme for Sunday is art in public space. This year´s international key note speaker is Mary Jane Jacob (USA), pioneer in the field. The theme is carried on by IHME Marathon, familiar from last year, introducing Finnish contemporary artists and engaging them in discussion. The evening ends with a new event entitled The Trial where contemporary art stands accused. Has contemporary art let down its audiences, as charged? Will contemporary art be found guilty or acquitted? The sentence is read by philosopher and columnist Tuomas Nevanlinna.

The IHME Days events are free of charge. Presentations and discussions held in English can be also heard simultaneously translated into Finnish. Some of the central presentations in Finnish will be translated into English. Please, see the programme for details.
